For all you true locals out there who know what I'm talking about, or all you visitors and military personnel who don't, this section is for the various endemic food types that have taken root here in a powerful way and each have developed into full-fledged local institutions. As with the rest of local foods, most of these are rooted in one ethnic group or another and have changed to meet the wider need. Newcomers will find this section interesting, as many of these products are scarcely mentioned in visitor guides or brochures even though they are all extremely popular with locals.

Oh, yes, there are more traditions, like the classic canned sardines with tomato sauce or shoyu/sugar, andagi (an Okinawan donut), Portuguese sausage, and more, but let’s not drive too far down this road (or maybe we will in the future!).
