Spam Musubi

This very simple item first hit the market well after poke, but has now become every bit as entrenched in our local culture. It consists of a fried slice of Spam placed over a mold of rice shaped like a small brick. The rice or the spam itself is usually flavored with a shoyu/sugar sauce, sometimes dusted with furikake, and wrapped in a dried sheet of seaweed called nori. They are great for a take-out snack or even a meal, and are perfect for hikes, where it won’t smash as easily in your backpack as a sandwich will. The everywhere-available 7-Eleven stores probably sell more spam musubi than anyone else, and they are not bad at all – providing you get them reasonably fresh. Try the one with sliced scrambled egg sitting under the Spam.
