Who's Got the Best North Shore Shrimp Truck???
Gotta admit, da Aku hasn't tasted 'em all yet, but these are some of the bigger names out there, and I'll continue adding different shrimp trucks to this page as I go. Click the above buttons to get a Closer Look at any of them, but if you just want the skinny? Well, the whole bruhaha surrounding North Shore shrimp trucks has been the garlic shrimp plate. This greasy, messy, but heavenly plate is what the big competitions are all about, and I've listed my choices down below. However, these days, there's a lot more to North Shore shrimp trucks than garlic shrimp plates, so I've also mentioned secondary thoughts on other types of plates, as well. These shops can be inconsistent at times, and tastes sometimes change over time, but here's what I've personally discovered thus far:
Best Garlic Shrimp Plate:
Giovanni's. No surprises. No bucking trends for the sake of being original or news-worthy. Here, there's good portions and that always in-your-face garlic/butter sauce. Plus, they've changed their hot sauce, the one thing I've not cared for much in the past, and it's delicious! Tough to beat, any way you look at it. However, the competition's real stiff, and I've found Macky's, Fumi's, and Buewater Shrimp and Seafood in Waikiki not very far behind. The latter has a different version some may find more appealing than any other, mostly due to their shrimps literally swimming in a soup of garlic/butter sauce.
Best Fried Shrimp Plate:
Fumi's. What's listed as shrimp tempura in most trucks is actually shrimp katsu. Fumi's version is far and away the best I've had.
Best Boiled or Steamed (Cocktail shrimp) Plate:
Romy's. Giant, whole, head-on shrimp done plain and simple.
Extra's:
Romy's has a lumpia-fried shrimp great for the kids or the deep-fried side of you.
Bluewater Shrimp & Seafood Co. (only Waikiki location) has a great shrimp plate as well as the largest variety on the block - shrimp, clams, crab legs, ahi, even burgers! The amount of clams on their clam plate is amazing for the price, and the buttery broth it sits in is fabulous. Hui Ohana has a killer, killer fish 'n chips plate!
