Happy Mother's Day!

mothers day flowers

5/10/09 - Mom's are the best!  Especially mine...  Between us four kids, sometimes mom gets to celebrate three or four different times, and get three or four different bunches of flowers, too!  Like any woman, she's a glutton for flowers, gifts, and going out for dinner with the kids and extended families.  This mother's day, we stayed home, instead, with gifts instead of a restaurant - after all, sometimes meals at home blow away any restaurant, ey?

As stated on the last closer look, here's a shot of the papio I caught the other day on my kayak, which was finally set-up with a rod holder.  My gosh, I haven't caught a real fish in years, and it felt sooo good!  Not to mention how awesome it was just to get out in the water, which, if it weren't for work and all the other responsibilites in life, would be a daily ritual for wifey and I!  One day surf, one day fish...  One day surf, one day fish...  No, no, better yet, morning surf, late afternoon fish...  Morning fish, late afternoon surf...  I could get into that every day!  Actually, this is one dream I'm not only hoping for, but workin' on to actually come true one day - Dreams do come true, yes...?

papio

Yeah, it wasn't no real fish by Kirby Fukunaga standards, for sure!  He free-dives in 100 feet of water all over the world, and doesn't mess with 3 lb. papio like this, but ulua carrying about 25X more sashimi!  And not only ulua, but just about anything edible out there, including open-ocean fish like ono, ahi, and mahimahi!  His site is listed on both my home page and closer look pages, but here's a straight-shot if you want to see what he's up to on any given day - http://www.go-naminori.com/kirbyfukunaga/.  He puts out a new round of adventures every single day, so whether it's pulling into the barrel of a 10 ft. set, shooting a 100 lb. ulua, or checking out a vibrant local market in Padang Padang, the Maldives, or Bali, you'll never know what you'll get!

Oh, well...  Hey, I'm still a happy camper after landing any 3 lb. papio, on any day, no matter what!  Another friend, Captain Kirk, says this fish is best eaten after a couple of days in the refrigerator as sashimi, as the crispy, firm flesh breaks down into more tender cuts, similiar to how beef is tenderized when aged for a couple of weeks.  I used to always pan-fry it or sashimi-it fresh, so for a different look, I decided to take his advice on the matter - Mother's day was two days out from the time it was caught, so perfect!

sashimi papio

Actually, Captain Kirk, I'd rather not wait!  The flesh does get much softer after a couple of days, but I prefer fresh, when it's still crispy, firm, and sweet!

Looks kinda funny with the carrots, but we were running low on daikon, so what can I say?

Like mom says, don't let anything go to waste - except for the guts, maybe.  The head, bones, collar, and everything else was salt 'n peppered, floured, and deep-fried for the perfect after-dinner pupu, and also a meal the next day!  And since we already waited two days for the sashimi and didn't want them hanging around un-cooked any longer, I deep-fried the left-over cuts, too (smaller, lighter pieces on-top).

But a papio and gifts surely weren't enough for mom on mother's day, so one more dish was needed - King Crab legs!  I was hoping for the giant, 1 lb.-each legs that Costco normally carries, but these were much smaller.  No worries.

Wifey and I de-constructed, then re-constructed the legs, afterwards placing them in the oven with a sprinkling of paprika and drizzling of butter and ponzu.  That way, mom (and wifey and I) could just pull the pieces out without one drop of crab juice on her fingers!  Gosh, why can't the restaurants ever do that for us!

Hope you've all had a great and fabulous mother's day!

Catch you all next time!
