Fast-Food Thai
These meals are either served cafeteria-style through a glass panel or in cheaper, plate-lunch-style surroundings where take-out is often the norm.
| Curries, satay, and more from Little Cafe Siam, at the Food Court of Ala Moana Shopping Center. |

Da Big Boy’z: Bangkok Chef for cheap, made-to-order dishes; Thai Mixed Plate for garlic chicken.
| Some dishes from Bangkok Chef, like this rad nah, are so large, they come in two plates - one for noodles, and one for the rest of the items! |

Bangkok Chef. A Closer look. 1626 Nuuanu Ave. in Kalihi, 585-8839; and 2955 E. Manoa Rd. in Manoa, 988-0212. Lunch and dinner daily, except closed on Sunday Nuuanu location. Parking outside stores. Prices: $. Map. Orders at this very casual eatery are taken from a walk-up counter, where you may seat yourself or take-out in classic plate-lunch fashion. They have gained quite a steady clientele of regulars who come for the great quality and large portions that suffer not one iota from the lower prices. Styrofoam plates are packed to the hilt, and if emptied on to a fine ceramic plate, could very well be served at many Thai restaurant on the island! Unlike the other fast-food joints listed in this section, the items are made to order and not left sitting under hot lights.
Thai Mixed Plate. 1000 Kamehameha Hwy. at the Pearl Highlands S.C. in Pearl City. 455-2233. Lunch and dinner daily. Parking in center lot. Prices: $. Map. Pick your choices through a glass panel and sit in the food court before catching a movie at the theatres a few stores down. Not the greatest Thai food, but the garlic chicken deserves special attention, with a sweet chili/shoyu flavor that’s tough to beat! The big downsides are that it is often overcooked and tough from being left under hot lights for too long, but the flavors and crispy chicken skins are so memorable, however, that I do consider it worthwhile enough to continue visiting, hoping that I’ve arrived just in time to catch a fresh batch! Sub-par pad thai noodles, but the curries are just fine for fast-food.
Little Café Siam. A Closer Look. The food court at the Ala Moana S.C. 943-8424. Lunch and dinner daily, except closed Sunday dinner. Parking in center lot. Prices: $. Map. You won’t find gourmet cuisine here, but Little Café Siam has vastly improved recently and can often entice me to stop by, especially when considering the other fast-food choices available at the Ala Moana Shopping Center Food Court. The coconut milk curries, pad-thai noodles, and fresh veggies are not a bad choice considering the location and prices. They also have a small open-flamed grill to prepare satay meats on a stick.
